RE Classic or RE Thunderbird

The biggest question asked around is which Enfield to buy. The same question was in my mind couple of years ago when I had to buy myself a new RE. I did some research, did rides on both of them and finally here is my take on which one you should buy.

So, Thunderbird or Classic?

maxresdefault

Engine –

Talking about the engine, both of them come in 350 CC and 500 CC variants. The Classic 350 cc generates maximum Power of 19.8 bhp @ 5250 rpm and Torque of 28 Nm @ 4000 rpm whereas Classic 500 maximum Power of 27.2 bhp @ 5250 rpm and Torque of 41.3 Nm @ 4000. The same goes for the Thunderbird 350 and 500 cc variants. Hence, there is no difference in the engine. The biggest difference is in the fuel supply system. The 350 cc of both have a carburetor while the 500 cc ones have EFI which is Digital.

Now, going by my experience, I would any day prefer carburetor over EFI in the RE because we all know how RE’s R&D department works. I have many friends and fellow riders who faced a lot of issues in the EFI which costs a bomb to replace (any mechanic will not even touch it). Many of them have replaced the EFI with carburetor.

Comfort –

It depends on what kind of rider you are, for city limits, classic is more comfortable… add a highway and TB is more comfortable. Classic’s maneuverability is better in traffic than TB but it all comes down to your riding posture and riding technique. (Do a test ride for that). Seats, handlebars and accessories are all available out there to make things comfortable.

After market accessories and service –

I would rate both almost equally. Because as on today, tons of accessories are available in the market both of the motorcycles. The classic might have a 1 point advantage though simple based on the fact – it’s just too common now. Everyone has a classic for crying out loud! Even those pseudo and kid riders who need a bullet to show off! You know who I am talking about, right? Yep, those!

Style –

Now, the biggest difference is in the looks. The Classic is the new version of the old retro RE look. The one called “Bult” in Punjab. The stance is that of a macho street motorcycle. The Classic 350 is the unsung hero of the Royal Enfield range. It is the Classic 350 that makes up the numbers since it is the most selling motorcycle for RE. Its retro styling combined with the relatively affordable price tag have made it the highest-selling RE model so far. Plus it has most re-sale value than the Thunderbird.

On the other hand, the thunderbird is sold by RE as a cruiser. Where classic has stayed in the same shape since it was launched (except the new colours), the T-bird (as it is called) has received many uplifts and facelifts. It was first launched in 2000, then first update came in 2009 with the UCE (unit construction engine) and then in 2012 another update came in featuring a teardrop shaped fuel tank, digital instruments and fuel gauge and a projector headlamp. Additionally, the motorcycle gets an LED tail light and a few other cosmetic enhancements which is the current setup. Personally speaking, the models after 2013 are better than the old ones. The 2011 to 2013 had major oil issues. The T-bird is being sold as a cruiser which I think is ridiculous. It may be a semi-cruiser but nothing more than that

The major upgrades of TB from Classic are – LED lights, Projector Headlamp, Rear Disc Brakes (which come in some of the classic models too), Digital instrument panel with trip, mileage, etc (the fuel gauge sucks, trust me). My personal favourite is the emergency parking lights which help during night rides. Also, beware the headlamp on the TB comes with non-removable mirror so if anything happens (rare) you will have to either go for aftermarket products or change whole headlamp setup. The other thing I liked in the TB is the black engine 😛

Speaking of which, next is. ..

Colors –

Now, one thing RE has mastered in all these years (wish they mastered in updating engine and build material and design) is the color of the motorcycles.

I have never seen other motorcycle brand offering fucking so many colours. Every year there is a new colour. Don’t believe me? Check this out –

Colors for Classic – 17 colors! Beat that!

  1. Squadron Blue (500cc)
  2. Desert Storm (500cc)
  3. Chrome (500cc) – It has 3 sub colours – Black, Graphite, Green
  4. Battle Green (500cc – Only available for the defence services or outside India)
  5. Normal 500cc – Silver, Black, Tan
  6. Normal 350 cc (Fuck me!) – Ash, Chestnut, Lagoon, Silver, Black, Redditch Red, Redditch Green, Redditch blue

Colors for T-Bird – 10 colors! Still not less!

  1. Stone (500cc and 350 cc)  – Matt Black. (I ride this one)
  2. Marine (500cc and 350 cc) – Blue
  3. Lightning (500cc and 350 cc) – Glossy Graphite
  4. Flicker (500cc and 350 cc) – Glossy black
  5. Asphalt (500cc and 350 cc) – kinda green

 Final verdict –

At the end it all comes down to one thing –  how you want to ride the RE. If you are looking for daily commute and less long rides, I would suggest go for Classic 350. If you are looking for more long rides and occasional city rides, I would prefer TB 350.

If you want to look macho (lol) and want that retro look, go for Classic and if you want to stand out a little and need higher stance with a bit off-road capability, go for TB. TB does better off-road, personally speaking. Take it anywhere.

If you need more power go for 500cc but I would rather suggest buy Himalayan for 500 cc bracket. Both classic and Thunderbird in 500cc suck. Load of issues.

In the end, ride safe and drink water!

Chai and sutta on a dhaba will work best! Get out on the road…

7 reasons to buy Royal Enfield

Well, you might be aware of the reasons one should buy an Enfield. I am not gonna quote same old lame reasons. Yes, you feel Royal, I know and you feel free, I know.

Just read, it might amuse you or persuade you in buying one.

 1. You can ride slow – There are many bikes out there for speed but do you know any other bike which feels amazing even when you ride it slow? Except Enfield, none I can think of. The thump, the sheer pleasure of having a slow ride is heaven many times. Even those who drive/ride behind you know you won’t go fast because, fuck! its an Enfield.

2. Ride solo or in a group – Except Harley or Indian, no other bike will look good in both solo and group. You are bound to turn heads no matter how and with whom you are riding. The fairings, the colors, the speed on some bikes will surely look good but metal is metal and in long run, Enfield will always be Enfield.

3. Unbiased Bike – Again, except Harley or Indian, Enfield is the most unbiased bike with respect to gender, caste, religion or whatever man! Anyone would look sexy on an Enfield. And it treats man and woman, the same.

4. You feel Rich – We all know that every month you will need to take it to the mechanic and do some or the other corrections. The service centers will suck your blood and money out. But in all of this, you will feel rich. Like “BC! service karani hai” again! 🙂 Common, its fun and accept it, you do feel rich in a way. Competition for Harleys and other superbikes.

5. Katrina and Anushka – Damn! This should have been the first point, right? Coz both of the ladies make the bike look sexier than ever. I don’t have any more lines to say for this point. PERIOD!

6. Aviators – Are you a fan of aviators? Those Ray bans and few others! No other bike can look hotter with those freaking RayBans!!

7. What? are you still reading for more reasons? Get your ass up and go buy or ride one! If you already have it, just ride! Have fun, take that dust and pollution to your lungs or get on the highway for that fresh air!

Until next time! Ride safe, Ride hard! And ………. Ride! I am leaving for another ride now!  See you!

Silent Revolution

Have you ever fcked yourself? When did you last fck yourself? Imagine a whole world fcking themselves everyday every minute on the road. That car just made a wrong turn or made an over take badly causing an accident prone situation. We have a lot of morons and idiots on the road these days who are in so hurry to reach their destinations that they forget someone else is also trying to reach somewhere. Its a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll so better keep that in mind next time you get on the road.

Right now sitting at throttle shrottle on faridabad gurgaon road, I thought of writing this blog over chai and sutta. Driving everyday from work to home and vice-versa I come across many morons and fcking idiots on the road. No matter how cool I try to be, these people leave me no choice but to abuse out loud. I am not hitting anyone; just frustrated to see how much stupid people can be.

But there is another side to the story as well. Why do these biker’s ride haphazardly. The answer lies on the roads. Everyone is in a hurry, they need to reach their destination forgetting the facts. Another reason is cars occupying all the lanes and honking in case any biker comes in the front. When was the last time you gave an indicator while changing a lane? (If you are in India). Since you have not, you expect the biker also to switch it on? And even if he does, you speed up even if you were driving dead all the time. This silent fight/revolution is seen everyday on the roads.

Each & every person is trying to show that he has a better and a bigger vehicle. You can show-off, no issues in that but don’t lose your calm on the road.

This revolution is silent. Last time when I was stuck in a jam, I parked my bike on the side and sat on the footpath to have a fag. And I observed!!

Cars hoking at bikes to move away even if there is a red light. Bikes changing lanes as soon as they find a space. Nobody seems to know how to drive. Then you have the all India famous auto wallahs. I have driven in loads of cities and one thing is common in all, the driving style of autowallahs which is – they dont know how to fcking drive. Then there are some highways and main roads where bikes are not allowed to enter. P.S. – Even if my bike is 350/500/1500 CC and i ride better than most of the cars on that road, bikes are forced to take longer and busy route. These kinds of delays also make the bikers to drive fast and awkwardly.

On a daily basis, based on my travel, coming to Noida, nobody knows what a Red light means. Even if you have a green, you need to pass with safely. In faridabad, I am yet to find roads in the midst of potholes. In Gurgaon, roads and traffic sense and traffic jams. In Delhi, people drive a little better but then you have Autos and most frustrating DTC buses.

Anyways, my tea and fag is over. Need to head to the road and continue my journey back.
So next time you drive/ride, remember, when was the last time you fcked yourself? And dont be a moron.

Drive safely and enjoy the ride!!
